New Solutions at Work: Supervisor Work Condition Cards, MONNIT Remote Temperature Monitoring & WCS Pinning Stations

What is it? Solutions-at-Work or “SAW” are individual ideas where a Member of the Mutual looked at an existing hazard and, through their employee’s years of experience, knowledge, or creativity, developed a Solution to the problem that eliminated or reduced the hazard to employees and the chance of injury.

Please see below for information on these three new Solutions at Work:

Supervisor Work Condition Cards

In a changing safety culture, there can be barriers and missed engagement opportunities between management and employees. While management may be trying to communicate a message, it may be delayed, may not receive buy-in from the deckplate workers, or may provide an opportunity for feedback. This can lead to communication breakdowns because often supervisors are not taught how to get buy-in or communicate messages effectively.

MONNIT Remote Temperature Monitoring

Millions of U.S. workers face heat exposure in their workplaces, leading to thousands of heat-related illnesses and some fatalities each year. Most outdoor fatalities occur within the first few days of working in hot environments due to the lack of heat acclimatization, which is the body's gradual adjustment to heat. Major occupational risk factors include heavy physical activity, hot conditions, lack of acclimatization, and heat-retaining clothing.

WCS Pinning Stations

Serious incidents can arise when employees working on a terminal are placed in a position where they are left unprotected from moving vehicles. OSHA continues to rank vehicular accidents as the leading cause of fatalities in longshoring and marine terminals.  A pinning station is a movable area that can be used in several ways, including when twist locks (or “pins”) need to be placed or removed from containers during vessel operations. Organizations need to look upward in the hierarchy of controls to keep workers protected while conducting these operations in challenging, ever-changing conditions.
