Operational Alert: Railcar Safety

Operational Alert’s, inform Signal Mutual Members of serious incidents or a significant near-miss within the Mutual. If you have similar operations, please share this Operational Alert with operation managers, supervisors, equipment operators, and all affected employees. It is imperative that management, at all levels review their operations for similar hazardous conditions, acts, and their controls.

We work in a maritime environment, so it may not be apparent that locomotives, railcars, and railroad tracks are a part of the waterfront environment. Marine terminals utilize “rail” to move tons of materials every day. However, other industries across the Mutual also work around railways and have rail tracks in their yards for mobile cranes, rail tracks that run along piers or have railways in construction areas.
