Terminal Technology Committee Releases New Focus on Safety Discussions

The Terminal Technology Committee brings together automated and semi-automated terminals to address the specialized operational and technology needs of modern port environments. The group focuses on advancing best practices, innovation, and efficient, safe terminal operations.

The Terminal Technology Committee is pleased to announce the release of a new Focus on Safety topic, available for use in safety meetings and toolbox talks.

Swingman Safety

Swingmen are responsible for manually handling cones (also known as twist locks) used to secure containers during vessel operations. This task remains a manual process and directly affects container safety and workflow efficiency.  Even as technology advances, this manual interface between the crane and pedestrian introduces unique risks, especially when performed near automated equipment.

Automation Truck Booth Pad Safety

Truck booth pads in an automated terminal environment are a critical part of a system to protect personnel and maintain operational efficiency. These truck booths serve as a designated area where the truck driver stands to initiate the process for container delivery. This crucial step ensures that the system correctly identifies the driver’s presence, aligns the truck for loading or unloading, and safely proceeds with the container transfer.
