Focus on Safety: Detecting Atmospheric Hazards in Confined and Enclosed Spaces

Cargo holds, tanks, voids, bilges, pump rooms, and other confined and enclosed spaces are common throughout vessels, marine terminals, and shipyard operations. Because these spaces often have limited ventilation and restricted entry and exit points, hazardous atmospheres can develop and remain undetected without proper monitoring.

Workers may routinely enter, inspect, maintain, or perform work in and around these spaces, making atmospheric testing and gas detection an important part of protecting employees and supporting safe entry practices.

Gas Monitor Options for Maritime Operations

There is no single gas monitor configuration that is appropriate for every maritime operation. Members should evaluate the potential atmospheric hazards associated with their specific work activities, locations, materials, and processes when selecting gas detection equipment.

The proper instrument and sensor configuration should be capable of detecting the hazards that may reasonably be present, helping employees identify unsafe atmospheric conditions before and during work in confined or enclosed spaces.
