Operational Alert: WELDER SHOCKED THROUGH DAMP CLOTHING

It is imperative that management, at all levels review their operations for similar hazardous conditions, acts, and their controls.

The shipbuilding industry has experienced serious incidents involving electrical shock to welders working in hot, humid conditions aboard vessels under repair and construction. In a recent event, a welder performing arc welding operations on the deck of a ship under construction was working in elevated heat conditions and was experiencing heavy perspiration. While repositioning, the welder knelt on the metal deck, allowing sweat-saturated clothing to make contact with the energized work surface, resulting in an electrical shock.
