Signal Safety Releases New Focus on Safety

The SMIA Safety Committee and Signal Safety Team have created a library of topics for Safety Meetings, or Toolbox Talks called Focus on Safety

Please see below for information on these new Focus on Safety Discussions:

Behind The Hardhat Mental Health Matters: According to the CDC, maritime workers face higher risks of injury, illness, and fatality than most other U.S. workers. But what’s often overlooked is the mental toll of this demanding work. Long hours, physical strain, and personal stress can lead to anxiety, depression, or worse. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 U.S. adults experienced a mental illness in 2023, and almost half received no treatment.

Don’t Slip, Trip, Or Skip the Rules: According to the CDC, maritime workers face higher risks of injury, illness, and fatality than most other U.S. workers. Fire Preventers Fire Watches and Incipient Firefighting: Fire Preventers are one of the most critical roles in the shipyard, responsible for protecting people and property from fire and explosion risks during hot work operations. These individuals oversee all hot work in their assigned area and have authority over other personnel regarding fire safety.

Rest To Be Your Best Sleep Smart, Work Safe: Getting enough rest isn’t just about personal well-being; it’s critical to workplace safety, especially in high-risk environments like ship repair, terminal operations, and working on the waterfront. Fatigue can seriously impair alertness, reaction time, decision-making, and coordination, all of which are essential for performing tasks such as hot work, heavy equipment operation, working around overhead and raised loads, and confined space entry.

Tool Color Code Inspection System: To state the obvious, the use of damaged or defective tools and equipment can lead to accidents and injuries. As a craftsman, you should perform a visual inspection of equipment before use, and tag and remove damaged or defective equipment from service immediately.

Wildfire Smoke: As wildfire season approaches across the western United States, protecting workers from the harmful effects of wildfire smoke is an important part of workplace safety. This document provides a summary of safety practices and regulatory requirements regarding wildfire smoke in Washington, Oregon, and California. Please refer to the state resource links below for specific action levels and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for each state.
